Garlic bread makes every meal better, especially if it’s this buttery, crispy, extra garlicky homemade garlic bread. I’ve been obsessed with this recipe for years now and probably make it more often than I should. Why? Because it really couldn’t be easier to make, it’s SO good, and it’s very freezer-friendly so you can keep some on hand for whenever that craving hits. …Which for me is pretty much every night. 😏

My husband loved this bread, and so did I. It was so easy to make and with ingredients that I always have on hand. The bread was light, tasty, and crispy. I’ll never buy frozen garlic bread again.

Homemade garlic bread with real butter and fresh garlic is incredibly simple to make and so much better than what you’ll find in the freezer aisle at the grocery store.
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make my absolute favorite garlic bread:
- Bread: The best bread, IMHO, is a large soft loaf of French bread or Italian bread. It soaks up the garlic butter well without getting too tough or crispy as it bakes. While I do generally love baguettes, they tend to get really hard and don’t soak up the butter as readily as a slightly softer loaf.
- Butter: Salted butter is the vehicle for all that garlicky flavor and makes the bread extra rich and delicious. You can use unsalted butter if you have it, but you’ll need to add extra salt to the garlic butter mixture to make sure all the flavors pop!
- Olive Oil: A little bit of olive oil helps make the butter more spreadable AND helps keep the butter from browning quite as fast while it bakes.
- Fresh Garlic: What would garlic bread be without fresh garlic?? Fresh garlic helps keep the garlic flavor front and center with a nice punchy finish.
- Garlic Powder: A little bit of garlic powder in addition to the fresh garlic adds a really deep garlicky base note, so you’re getting a full one-two garlic punch!
- Parsley: Fresh parsley adds a little bit of freshness to cut through the rich butter and strong garlic flavor, plus it adds a pretty splash of green color. You can skip the parsley if you don’t have any on hand.
- Salt: There is some salt in the salted butter, but adding just a little more really helps all of the flavors in the garlic bread really pop.
Storage Instructions
This garlic bread is perfect for freezing. After spreading the delicious garlic butter mixture onto your loaf, freeze it in an air-tight container, like a gallon-sized freezer bag. It can then be baked straight from the freezer, with just a couple of extra minutes of baking time added.
To store leftover garlic bread that has already been baked, make sure to allow it to cool completely to room temperature before packing in an air-tight container to avoid condensation. The garlic bread will stay good at room temperature for about a day, or in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Reheat in an air-fryer for a minute or two, microwave for about 30 seconds, or wrap tightly in foil and bake at 350ºF for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through.
What Else Can I Add?
The basic recipe below is divine on its own (IMHO), but you can make it even more epic by adding any of the following ingredients:
- Stir a tablespoon or two of pesto into the garlic butter mixture for a fun twist.
- Try stirring a couple of tablespoons of grated Parmesan into the garlic butter mixture for a crispy umami finish.
- Top with whole milk mozzarella before baking to make it into an easy cheesy garlic bread.
- Use roasted garlic instead of or in addition to the fresh garlic for a milder, roasted flavor.
- Add more herbs. Try stirring an Italian herb blend or a pinch of red pepper flakes into the garlic butter for even more flavor. Or, if you have an herb garden, add in some chopped basil or oregano.

Homemade Garlic Bread
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French or Italian bread (approx. 24" long) ($2.99)
- 6 Tbsp butter, room temperature ($0.75)
- 2 Tbsp olive oil ($0.32)
- 4 cloves garlic, minced ($0.32)
- 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley ($0.22)
- 1/8 tsp salt ($0.01)
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder ($0.02)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400ºF. In a bowl, stir together the room-temperature butter, olive oil, minced garlic, garlic powder, chopped parsley, and salt until relatively smooth (a few small lumps of butter are okay).
- Cut the loaf in half, into two 12" long pieces, then cut each piece open lengthwise. Lay the bread on a baking sheet cut sides facing up. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the open surfaces of the bread.*
- Bake the bread for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and crispy. Bake for less time if you prefer a softer garlic bread, and more time if you prefer a crispier garlic bread. Cut the bread into 2-inch sections and serve hot.

How to Make Garlic Bread – Step By Step Photos
Begin by preheating the oven to 400ºF. In a bowl, combine 6 Tbsp room temperature butter, 2 Tbsp olive oil, 4 minced cloves of garlic, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley, and ⅛ tsp salt.
Mix the garlic butter ingredients together until they’re evenly combined. It’s okay if there are some small butter lumps left in the mixture.
Cut one large French loaf (24 inches) into two 12-inch sections, then cut each section open lengthwise.
Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the open surfaces of the bread, making sure to get all the way to the edges.
If you want, you can freeze some of the unbaked garlic bread for later! Bake the frozen garlic bread as usual, no need to thaw, adding just a couple extra minutes to the bake time.
Place the garlic bread on a large baking sheet (using parchment is optional, but makes clean up easier). Bake the garlic bread in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until it is golden brown and crispy on the edges. Bake less time for softer garlic bread and longer for crispier garlic bread.
Cut the garlic bread into 2-inch wide pieces and serve!
Yaassssssss. Garlic bread ❤️ forever.
How much additional salt should I add to the recipe if using UNsalted butter?
A scant 1/4 teaspoon extra should do the trick!
I couldn’t agree more! There’s something about buttery, crispy, and extra garlicky homemade garlic bread that takes any meal to the next level. It’s the kind of indulgence that’s hard to resist, and the fact that it’s freezer-friendly makes it even better! Having it ready to go whenever the craving strikes is a game-changer. This sounds like the perfect go-to recipe for garlic bread lovers—easy, delicious, and always satisfying!
Beth, this garlic bread recipe is fantastic! I love how easy it is to make, and the addition of olive oil really enhances the flavor. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips and variations!
Delicious! Easy! I love having some in the freezer for busy nights!
This is the first time I’ve ever made real garlic bread. Even better than the restaurants because it is homemade. I doubled the recipe and added slices of fresh mozzerella ($9.99 splurge) for the kids. Delightful indeed!
I knew you would have a “winner” garlic bread recipe and was glad to find this one as I had volunteered to take garlic bread to a church function tonight. Sure enough, I am so appreciative of your tips re: olive oil and using garlic and garlic powder. Thanks to your recipe, which was quick to prepare, the end result was perfect. I will have to make garlic bread soon because there were no leftovers. :-)
I tried to make this garlic bread for my son who dislikes garlic, he says it burns his skin. I told him that garlic bread it is better than normal garlic so that he would feel more inclined to try it. I gave him a wooden spoon to eat the soup that accompanied the bread. We can’t have silverware since the steel scares him. He is quite troubled, he gets bullied in school for being pale and have long canine teeth “fangs”. When he ate the piece of garlic bread he got set alight, i was so shocked since i have never tried it and my wife told me that “it’s fine he is half human, it won’t kill him”. I tried all the techniques to makes sure the fire stopped, but he was slowly melting in front of my eyes.
Best comment I’ve seen on any recipe!
maybe you should tell your son to put it in his mouth instead of using it as body lotion
adding some grated parmesean adds a nice pop of flavor
wow this was amazing! my family just gobbled this right up…. the bread I used was Schwebels ‘taliano Subs, 8 count and followed the recipe with no changes made to it… used a cookie sheet with parchment paper and baked in my oven at 400 for 6-8 min. and it was perfect not too crispy, didn’t get to hard, and didn’t burn… was the perfect combo of soft and a bit of crisp… I def. will be making this again prob tomorrow night with meatballs and spaghetti 😁 thank you so much for sharing your recipe it was simple tasty delicious…
We had all sorts of bits and bobs left after a party, including an untouched loaf of French bread and parsley. Paired with household staples (butter, olive oil, garlic), we made lovely slabs of this garlic bread. My husband said this recipe is better than anything we’ve bought at the store. Thank you, I will never again lament a day-old loaf.
My husband loved this bread, and so did I. It was so easy to make and with ingredients that I always have on hand. The bread was light, tasty, and crispy. I’ll never buy frozen garlic bread again.
Will never buy store-bought garlic bread again! This was amazing and so easy!
Loved it.
If you want a cheaper loaf of bread… Jimmy John’s sells day-old loaves for 50 cents 😉
Great tip!! Thank you!
My family did nothing more than add garlic to butter to make garlic bread, so I’m so glad I decided to search for a recipe on-line. Found this one quickly and let me just say, it was SOOOO good! I will never order garlic bread from a restaurant again. We all loved it and the fact that you can make this ahead and freeze it makes it even better! It sounds insane to me that we never made good garlic bread until now! And so easy…! Thanks!
Too dry. Not enough spread for a 24 inch loaf.
This garlic bread was amazing! I didn’t have fresh parsley so used a tablespoon of dried parsley. Served this with slow cooker white bean soup (recipe also from this site) and it was hit!
Beth, I love you like a plucky sister and you’ve brought me many fine meals, but you really need someone on staff that can proofread. Shouldn’t take more than a year or so to go through the backlog! Here’s what jumped out just on a quick read-through:
It soaks up the garlic bread well
A little bit of olive oil helps make the olive oil more spreadable
with just a couple of extra baking time added
instead of in in addition
Thanks, I’ll fix those now. ;)
Beth. Dear Beth.
You are a million times nicer than me. At least!!
Thanks for all the delicious meals I’ve had over the years thanks to you!
Thanks for reposting this. You have so many hidden gems. If I didn’t try it when I originally saw it, I tend to forget about it. So, thank you for all of the happy reminders when you post again!
This is a GREAT recipe! I love to make a whole batch and then freeze most of it. I’ve never actually made it with French bread, just various kinds of oval shaped white bread. I think it wouldn’t work quite as well with a bread that has lots of big holes in it (for butter containment reasons) or with a really sturdy whole wheat bread. Anyway, what an (affordable!) luxury to always be fine minutes (or however long the toaster oven takes) away from garlic bread. Thanks, Beth!!!
Awesome garlic bead, the family loved it!
Sooo good, dangerously so! We loved this and it baked from frozen perfectly, but I will decrease garlic a bit next time. Loved the mix of olive oil and butter.
Easy & great!!
Very good garlic bread!
Can the garlic butter be stored in a mason jar and saved for later though? If I wanted to make it in bulk and store it?
Yes, and I applaud you! XOXO -Monti
This is my go-to garlic bread recipe. I also use the same garlic spread recipe for making cheese pizzas — great when using regular or mini Naan breads too. For an added garlic flavor, I infuse the olive oil with whole cloves first. Take 2 peeled whole cloves and crush the cloves. Place them in a small sauce pan with the olive oil and heat the mix over medium-low heat for about 2 minutes. Don’t let them get brown. Discard the cloves and use the infused oil in the garlic spread portion of this recipe, along with the minced garlic.
Hi Robert
I really like the idea of using garlic infused olive oil. Just wanted to know the amount of olive oil you use for this process? Thanks
Very tasty. Easy to make.
made this tonight
excellent garlic toast
think that olive oil kicked it up a notch
I used leftover brioche buns because that was the only “fancy” bread I had, but used your recipe and baked for slightly less time. Pure heaven!
Very nice garlic bread homemade recipe. Very easy to make it. I like.
why only 3 stars then?
I loved this recipe but I first roasted a whole head of garlic in the oven at 400 degrees. First cut the top of garlic head open sprinkle with olive oil and a bit of dried thyme. Wrap in foil and roast until soft. when cool squish out garlic . Mix with the olive oil and butter in this recipe and follow recipe. Comes out very tasty
I made this with Walmart’s Great Value Texas toast bread and it turned out excellent. Unfortunately, I can’t eat it due to celiac but my boys loved it. Just like the stuff you buy only better because I know what goes in it. Thanks again, Beth, for a great recipe.
Can this garlic bread be frozen with cheese on it or should I wait to put the cheese on until I bake it
I would probably just put it on just before baking. It might be hard to get the cheese to stick to it if frozen before baking. :)
This bread was excellent! I know what I’m putting in my recipe ie.. the vegan butter that I use rather that dairy and cheese is good but I prefer not to have it, and most of the garlic breads already prepared have cheese on it. I’m so glad I came across this recipe and will be making it on a regular on the go forward. I’d also like to mention as you have price per ingredient that is soooo much cheaper than those already prepared breads.
My wife had decided to cook a dish from Greece for Sunday dinner she loves Creek food as she lived there for a few years called Patstisio.
I decided to make our own garlic bread to go with it, So searched for a recipe and came across this one. We had all the ingredients in too.
I rushed down to the local bakery purchased a baguette, followed the recipe and it was superb. My wife loved it.
Dead easy and delicious
Superb!!
Made it with coriander as had no parsley and very good!
Thank you for sharing
Made for my kids that i au pair they loved it!
After I spread the Garlic, butter , olive oil and mixed from room Temp. on the bread I also spoon a couple of Tbl. spoons of Mayo spread on then top with grated Parmesan Cheese. When I serve this to my guests I always get rave revues . It is delicious .
can i use normal bread instead?
It won’t quite be the same but you can try if that’s what you have on hand!
Can you use dried parsley instead of fresh
Yes but you will not need as much. Dried herbs carry way more punch!
This recipe has become a staple. When I have time, I chop up the garlic; otherwise, I have Penzey’s dried garlic as a back-up (directions say to let it soak in butter or oil for a bit). Pick up a loaf of bread from Jimmy John’s (inexpensive and not super thick as bread from the grocery store) and slather on the butter. Delicious!
Have also made the frozen version. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to trying more recipes.
Good to know the dried will work in a pinch! Thanks for sharing Donovan!
I love this recipe! So easy and fast to do and really good! Definitely gonna make this one again!
Thanks!
Hi! I recently made your chicken noodle soup, your tomato soup AND ur garlic bread and I wanted you to know how grateful I am. I’m disabled and very unwell at the moment, these tecipes were affordable, easy to follow and most importantly tasty as hell. Thank you! You have a big fan in someone who usually never comments and is too forgetful to follow. Thank you xxxx
Thank you Rain! Sending thoughts of healing your way.
I love Garlic Bread so much I have tried so many recipes for the same thing. But something was wrong don’t know why? and also I have tried your recipe some days back and It came out really well. Thanks for sharing this recipe in details dear. Loved it completely.
Happy to hear it worked out this time.
Delicious and easy! 3 year old asked why there was grass on it, but he still enjoyed the taste of the parsley!😅
I am a big fan of your all recipes and this time I can’t stop myself to comment on this amazing recipe the way you have explained this recipe is super and awesome picture presentation. I always pin your recipes and when I get time I used to try it to impress my husband and he loves it always all thanks to your efforts and sharing
Thank you!
Loved the garlic butter, loved ths recipe, thank you so much for sharing. I made one tiny change, I used a rasp to mince the garlic. This way the garluc is like a paste or a puree, either way it is smooth. Then I added the other ingredients and yummy on bread, pasta, steak, potatoes, sandwiches…posivilities are endless.
Thank you for this great recipe, Beth!I have made this recipe multiple times for meals at home and for dinner parties, always receiving rave reviews.
I like to place all the ingredients for the spread in a small food processor (I have a Ninja) and have a smooth spread in about 30 seconds. I pop the food processor in the dishwasher. No muss, no fuss and delicious garlic bread. 😃
This recipe is definitely a keeper! I make some a freeze some because it’s become a family favorite in our house. Thank you for sharing this recipe
This recipe is fantastic! Tastes amazing. The only change I made was not adding the olive oil. My family loved it and I will definitely be making this again thanks :-)
I made French bread from scratch. So I had some left over. Saw this and made it. Yum!! Baked ziti and garlic bread thank you!
This is fantastic!!!! Thank you so much! Everyone commented on how delicious it was. This will be the only way I’ll make garlic bread! It’s just almost impossible to stop eating it!
When baking it straight from the freezer, should I wrap it in tinfoil first?
I baked it without foil, but I suppose you could if you want it extra soft. :)
YUM! This garlic bread is so delicious and so, so easy. We used to buy a pre-made garlic butter spread from our grocery store’s deli to make garlic bread at home, but for whatever reason they carry a different brand now, and it is NOT as good. We’ve been shopping around for garlic bread, with no luck. So I tried your version, and it’s perfect!! The only suggestion I’d make is to try to make the garlic into as much of a paste as possible before mixing it with everything else – otherwise you have pieces of garlic that sometimes try to fall off the bread while you’re eating. But still, A+ flavor.
Made this once already! Perfect ingredients! Im just about to make this again tonight!
I will never eat store-bought garlic bread again. I LOVE garlic bread, and I never realized it was so easy to make! Once again, Beth, you have taught me a valuable lesson. The only hard thing about this recipe is not shoving it all in your face at once.
I have a confession. I made this garlic bread. Then I topped it with cheese and toasted until the cheese was just slightly browned and all bubbly. It was my pity-party comfort-food dinner (yes, just the garlic-cheesy bread). It was insanely fantastic.
I’m pretty jealous. :) I have those pity-party comfort food dinners on occasion, too. My go-to is a baguette and some brie. That’s it. Cheese and bread!
This looks really good. I can never get my garlic bread right and we have a lot of it around here. Either I make it too soggy or too dry, so this looks like a good one to try!
Garlic bread is one of those things that is either good or it just isn’t. Doesn’t seem to be any in between in my experience. This recipe was really good and everyone loved it. Now I have a consistent way to make garlic bread that will be good ever time!
My dad and I actually take a whole stick of butter and mix it up with garlic and parsley and let it harden in the fridge. We put it on steak and bread and noodles…everything you can think of!
Anyone will love a good loaf of garlic bread!
It looks amazingly delicious!
I think I’ll totally make a big batch of garlic butter and keep it in my fridge, then whenever I want garlic toast, I can just spread a nice thick layer on my bread and toast it up. Yum!
