oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! This Spicy Shrimp Tomato Pasta has me excited.

I’m not a person that goes crazy over anything that has shrimp in it, but this Spicy Shrimp Tomato Pasta might be a game changer. It’s basically a scaled back Shrimp Fra Diavolo. It’s so simple and delicious. Did you hear me? SIMPLE. *dramatic pause*

What we have here is a really basic sauce made with olive oil, butter (for richness), garlic, diced tomatoes, crushed red pepper, and a little salt and pepper. It’s just that simple. The shrimp helps give the sauce a little depth and the crushed red pepper adds just enough zing to balance the richness of the butter. It’s perfect.

…Although, if you wanted to, you could add a little dry white wine to the sauce. It’s not exactly economical, but it tastes awesome and if you’re going to pop a cork to serve some with dinner anyway, you might as well add a splash or two to the sauce. Just an options for ya.

I already know that some of you will try to cut the fat in the recipe and if you do, I beg you not to skip the butter. If needed, just use one tablespoon each of olive oil and butter, but DO. NOT. skip the butter. You’ll hurt my feelings.

It’s perfectly okay to use frozen shrimp in this – I did. It can be thawed super fast by running cool water over it. Just don’t let the shrimp sit in standing water.

Anyway, make this. It’s perfect for summer. Nom nom nom.

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add the pasta, and continue to boil for 7-10 minutes, or until tender. Drain the pasta in a colander.
  • While the pasta is cooking, add the olive oil and butter to a large skillet and place over medium heat. Mince the garlic while waiting for the butter to melt.
  • Rinse the shrimp with cool water and allow the excess water to drain away. Add the shrimp and minced garlic to the skillet. Saute the shrimp and garlic for 3-5 minutes, or just until the shrimp turns opaque and slightly pink (no longer grey and translucent). Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set it aside until later.
  • Add the can of tomatoes with juices to the skillet, along with the crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and some freshly cracked pepper. Stir to combine and let the sauce simmer over medium heat for about five minutes.
  • When the sauce has thickened slightly, add the cooked and drained pasta. Toss to coat in the sauce. Add the cooked shrimp back to the skillet and toss to combine with the pasta. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.
  • Roughly chop a handful of parsley leaves and sprinkle over top before serving.

oil and butter in skillet on stove top

Start bring a large pot of water to a boil for the pasta. Add the olive oil and butter to a skillet and melt over medium heat. Mince the garlic while the butter is melting.

Shrimp and Garlic added to skillet

Rinse the shrimp under cool water and allow the excess water to drain away. When the butter has melted, add the rinsed shrimp and minced garlic. Saute for a few minutes or until the shrimp is no longer translucent.

Cooked Shrimp (will turn pinkish white)

They turn white/pink and curl up when they’re done. It really only takes a few minutes. You want to remove them from the skillet at this point so that they don’t continue to cook as you finish the sauce. Continuing to cook the shrimp will make it shrink up and get very rubbery.

Pasta added to pot of boiling water

At this point your water is probably boiling, so you can add the pasta. Boil the pasta until it is tender. I used fancy/expensive pasta this time, and the whole dish was still very inexpensive!

Tomatos and Pepper in skillet to make sauce

After removing the shrimp from the skillet, add the can of diced tomatoes (with juices), red pepper flakes, salt, and some freshly cracked pepper. The juices left over in the skillet from the cooking shrimp adds a lot of flavor to the sauce. Stir this together and let it simmer for a few minutes while the pasta finishes cooking. (This is also where you can add a little white wine if you have it. Maybe 1/4 to 1/2 cup.)

Cooked pasta added to skillet with sauce

Add the cooked and drained pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat the pasta in the sauce.

Shrimp added to skillet with pasta and sauce

Now that it’s pretty much done, you can add the shrimp back in. Toss to mix the shrimp into the pasta.

Parsley sprinkled on top of dish

Finish it off with a little roughly chopped fresh parsley and you’re ready to eat! So Pretty!

  1. This recipe saved my sanity tonight! I had to change things because it’s what we had in the cupboard- a can of stewed tomatoes instead of diced, and chili powder instead of crushed red pepper flakes.
Even my MIL complimented the dinner!

    1. That would require a very different method and I’d need to test that before offering a suggestion. :)

  2. I used scallops instead of shrimp and used more crushed red pepper. So yummy and easy. Easy recipe to double as well. Oh I also added spinach. Yummmmm.

  3. So I just made this (used spaghetti squash instead of pasta) and here was the calorie breakdown for me:

    Spaghetti Squash (10 oz) = 50
    medium raw shrimp (1/2 lb) = 140
    olive oil (2 Tbl) = 240
    butter (1 Tbl) = 100
    garlic (6 cloves) = 18
    diced tomatoes (14.5 oz) = 87.5
    Parsley/spices = .5

It came to a TOTAL of 636 calories!
Oh yeah. I’m definitely making this again!

Any tricks for cooking with spaghetti squash? I liked it but it was a tad too hard. Would a different veggie work better?

  4. Every Sunday for the past month I try one of your recipes to add on my books of cooking. I’m a beginner & very picky on measurements. You do such a great job explaining & showing the recipe in pictures! I’m enjoying cooking more than usual. My fiancé gets really excited for Sunday’s now. As do I! Thank you

  5. I made this tonight. It was really easy and it turned out great. I think I’d like the sauce to be sweeter. I’m not sure if adding sugar would be the right way to do that, but I think I might try.

My teenage son thought it was great.

  6. Quick recipe and pretty good. I cooked this per the recipe (except accidentally buying already cooked shrimp.. which is why the dish isn’t probably isn’t as delicious as the others. Lesson learned!) I think I’ll add some sautéd mushrooms for to this dish next time to increase my veggie intake.

  7. I have been making this recipe 1-4 times a month since you posted this two years ago, and it’s always a family favorite. I really can feed 4 hungry people in NYC for less than $10, with a recipe that takes under 20 minutes start to finish. I also always get compliments on it from guests. .. to which I (almost) always pass on to Budget Bytes!. Thanks!

  8. This was easy and delicious, even though we didn’t have any parsley! Not too spicy either, for someone like me who has very little tolerance for spicy foods. Will make this one again for sure.

  9. I’ve made this a few times in the past but eyeballed measurements and it was nice. Today I actually bothered to measure and ohhhh man it was goooood. The sweetness of the tomatoes, the bite of the red pepper flakes and the garlicky shrimp, mmm! I did throw in some crumbled feta in the end, which went perfectly with the other stuff. I love how this uses ingredients I always have on hand, and I love easy recipes like this one. Great recipe!

  10. Delicious! I added a bit of lemon to the garlic, butter and oil, and topped the pasta with parmesan.

    1. I would do about a 1/2 cup and add it to the skillet after you remove the cooked shrimp.

  11. I’m going to alter this a bit. I’m going to use cherry tomato halves and fresh spinach. No butter.

  12. I can’t wait to try this.  Here’s a slight criticism though.  I know prices on things will vary but when you list 22 cents for fresh parsley I can’ just buy a little bit at the store so I have to spend $1.29 for a bunch.  Maybe you could suggest other recipes that use the same fresh herb so I can make them later in the week.  Or post how to grow your own fresh herbs year round? Thanks so much for the website, I just downloaded the app and can’t wait to get cooking this week.

    1. To find recipes to use up your extra parsley, just type “parsley” into the search box up at the top right hand of the page. I’m also integrating a new ingredient tagging system where you can click on an ingredient from a list and it will pull up every recipe where that ingredient is used, which will be more accurate than just using the search box. :) Hopefully that will be done in about a month!

  13. This was amazing!!! Definitely going into regular rotation. I followed the recipe to a T with one exception…I added about 3oz. of cream cheese that I needed to use up into the tomatoes while it was simmering, added just a little creaminess :)

  14. this was fun and stressful to make! one of my first recipes! I am at the tender age of 19. I added parmesan cheese at the end and liked it a lot. Also I didn’t have any garlic and had to put garlic salt in it instead.
My little sister said she liked it at first but then said she didn’t.
My Foreign exchange student said she thought it was really good.
My mom said it was pretty alright.
    I. personally am jumping over the moon.

    1. Congratulations on experimenting with a new recipe! The more you try the better you’ll get. :) And don’t ever let failures stop you because that’s just part of learning.

  15. This was really fast and delicious! I ate it over spaghetti squash instead of pasta. I loved how buttery it tasted despite only having a tablespoon of butter (Pioneer woman’s shrimp scampi dish had 1 stick of butter!) I will definitely make this again. bravo!

  16. Hey Beth! Love how simple this recipe is.

I tried it out last night – the taste turned out to be quite heavy on the tomato side, and I couldn’t taste enough of the prawn sweetness in my sauce. Is it supposed to be like that?

    1. Hmm, mine didn’t taste super tomatoey. I suppose it might be either the brand of tomatoes, or perhaps just a difference in our taste buds?

      1. Thanks a lot for replying! I’ll try it again, see if the taste comes out similar haha

  17. I make this all the time for my family. I have two daughters under the age of 4 so they cant take a lot of spice. I add in a small bag of Parmesan Cheese and take out the Red Pepper Flakes and my picky eater LOVES it! Love looking at your recipes!

  18. I love this recipe. I’ve made it many times before and made it again tonight. Thanks Beth.

  19. I’ve been using your site for about 5 years and I must say I’ve made this dish several dozens of times. It’s one of those dishes that I share with company and my boyfriend always requests it. I like to add the butter at the end and use olive oil to start off the shrimp. Extra red pepper flakes of course and sometimes we’ll use fresh linguini from a pasta shop in the Italian market near my house. The leftovers are worth fighting over too! Thanks Beth for making me a confident cook!

  20.       Wow, what a lovely pasta recipe you have shared. It is looking very delicious and yummy. Yes I made this recipe for my friend and now he is one of your biggest fan and me too. Thanks for sharing nice recipe.

  21. This is a very tasty recipe and so simple. I used half the red pepper flakes as my husband does not like things too hot. I did not have fettuccine so I used linguine. Otherwise I made the recipe as directed. What a great way to stretch shrimp! It’s a keeper!! Thanks!

  22. Are you freaking kidding me? This looks delicious! :D I will definitely be making this sometime next week, even though it is 20 degrees right now and this is technically a summer dish. But what summer doesn’t know, won’t hurt her.

  23. My family lined this dish! I followed the recipe almost to a t. However, I had to make a few minor changes. I used fire roasted tomatoes and added a sprinkle of garlic salt at the end. And because my hubby gets heartburn I added a little sugar on the tomatoes. I will definitely be making this again! Thanks Beth!!

  24. This dish rocks! This is now the only pasta dish that exhists in my house. It’s got a lot of flavor, then again I cooked mine in the shell, and then had to remove them before each bite. I really think it adds a depth to the dish, though. Thanks so much!

  25. Just made this tonight. It was SO good! Had it with italian bread & salad. Will definitely be making it again!

  26. This sounds like a very simple recipe and I can not wait to make this for dinner. However, I want to add brocolli into it, any suggestions about when I should add it in? Thank you!

    1. After you remove the shrimp from the skillet, add the broccoli florets and sauté until crisp/tender. Then proceed as usual. OR, add the florets to the pasta water during the last minute to lightly cook them (crisp/tender again), and then drain and add it along with the pasta. :)

  27. love this recipe, i throw in a can of spinach to add some greens at the end.

  28. I just made this for dinner for my (incredibly picky) son and he ate it without too much complaining!
I did cut the shrimp in his serving into teeny tiny pieces so they weren’t overwhelming.
And I added spinach, because spinach makes everything better :)

  29. This meal was both easy and delicious. My daughter kept asking if it came from a restaurant. This one is going into my monthly rotation.

  30. I thought I had everything to make this for dinner tonight.

Everything except the tomatoes, and parsley. BUT I did have a jar of Newman’s Sockarooni and I otherwise followed the recipe. The butter and the garlic really helped out the jarred sauce. Not to mention the shrimp. A winner! Thanks!

  31. Stumbled on to your website via MSN and boy am I happy I did so! This was the recipe featured and I tried it out tonight. Had to substitute chicken as my husband has an aversion to seafood. And it was GREAT!!! My one-year-old loved it, and was gesturing for more. This will definitely be a part of our meal rotation. :)

  32. I made this tonight for myself & my family. it was fabulous! and SO EASY! I added Sriracha instead of chili flakes. loved the lip-tingling kick it gave! definitely something I will make again in the future :)

  33. So simple and so delicious! I almost always add things to a recipe but I didn’t this time and it was perfect.

  34. Love this recipe! This recipe has become has a staple as I am a college student working full time and I am terrible at planning meals out! Its so easy because I always have a jar of pre minced garlic, canned tomatoes, whole wheat linguine, and frozen shrimp on hand! However, I like to make two changes to it! Instead of removing the shrimp, I like to poor the tomatoes in with sautéed shrimp and allow them to simmer together to get more flavor! I also love to add to sriacha hot sauce to the finished pasta! Serve with some steamed sugar snap peas on the side and it is a perfect meal!

  35. I can’t have dairy. I know you said don’t skip the butter but… Would it still taste ok. It’s so hard to find yummy stuff with no dairy!

    1. I suppose it wouldn’t be terrible, but it definitely wouldn’t be the same. Whether it’s good or not is probably subjective. :)

    2. Is it that lactose in dairy that you can’t have? If so, Blue Bonnet makes a lactose free butter that I always buy. Tastes exactly the same. I’m lactose intolerant and buy everythingggg lactose free.

  36. My family and I LOVED this recipe!!!! It has become a part of our menu on a regular basis!!! I did used cooked frozen shrimp instead of the raw shrimp and I made it the same way and it turned out AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  37. Looking forward to making this for supper tonight. Just asking…but did you clean the shrimp? In a couple of the photos they still appear to have a black vein running down the back.

    1. No, I didn’t. They were supposedly peeled and deveined, but I guess a few slipped through?

  38. This looks delicious. I rarely cook with shrimp- how long do you think it would last in the fridge?

  39. Super easy and delicious! I used fresh tomatoes I diced myself instead (I have a lot of problems opening cans, so I just decided to never use them haha) and it still turned out great, added extra red pepper flakes for more heat! Will definitely be making this again.

  40. Made this tonight and it was so good I shared on facebook! Hubs loved it too! Used whole wheat angel hair pasta. Simple and easy and didn’t change a thing because it was perfect as is!

  41. The recipe looks sooooo delicious! My SO and I are having some friends over for dinner tomorrow night and this will be perfect with a simple side salad and something fancy for dessert.

Do you think I could get away with frozen, already cooked shrimp? Just realized the ones I have in the freezer are pre-cooked “salad shrimp”.

    1. Well, you could, but the sauce won’t have quite as much of a shrimp flavor. When you cook them from raw, they give off juice that adds flavor to the sauce.

  42. Made this for dinner tonight. It was AWESOME! My family loved it and it was so easy. The hardest part was peeling and deveining the shrimp. Thank you!

  43. Oh boy, this was so tasty and fast to make for my hungry family on a hot humid night (so kitchen didn’t get more heated!) I had some frozen broccoli florets so tossed them in when pasta was done, then drained. Pretty, yummy, and still enough sauce for everything – I love Beth’s idea of a bit of goat cheese and will try that next time. Oh yeah girl, you’re getting me quite a reputation as a good cook…! ;-)

  44. Mmm, this was delicious. I rarely cook with shrimp because it never seems cost effective. This was simple enough and I cut each of the shrimp in half after cooking since they were slightly large than the ones you used. It was awesome and so easy and fast! I added a bit of fresh basil (because it was in my garden, so why not?) and a healthy splash of white wine. Great recipe!

  45. loved the pasta, will be making more of it in the future, i made naan with it, i loved the combination with the sauce and naan.

  46. Omg….I just made this and totally love it. Thanks, I’m totally passing it on to my sister and cousin who are in college.

  47. I would like to try out this recipe, but would it freeze well?

On a side note, I can safely say that your blog is the sole reason I started cooking, and I must thank you!

    1. This one won’t freeze quite as well as some others because it doesn’t have much sauce (just enough to coat the pasta, really) and the shrimp will probably over cook while reheating.

  48. This was a HIT at our house tonight!!! A definite winner…I just added 1/2 tsp. of red chili flakes instead of 1/4…It kicked up the heat a bit….I will definitely make this as a regular…

  49. I really liked this recipe. So simple!

I did a few changes that raise the price but I think were worth it: fresh instead of dried pasta, bottle diced tomatoes instead of canned to avoid the BPA, garlic powder because I ran out of regular garlic.

I am going to try it today with already cooked shrimp meat because it was a lot cheaper than the other version.

  50. I just made this vegan and gluten free. I have tempura cakes from the Asian grocery store that my boyfriend says tastes like shrimp. I think they taste disgusting so he is probably accurate. Anyway used coconut oil and salt for the richness that you achieve with butter and added a tsp of apple cider vinegar. I used fresh roma tomatoes since I didn’t have canned then I added spinach because I didn’t have fresh parsley and wanted the green color. Plus I love spinach. I used GF corn pasta and everything else I did the same except I made an extra portion “shrimp” free for me and it’s beautiful and delicious. I wish I had mushrooms because I think that would have been an awesome replacement. Maybe next time. Thanks for the great, simple recipe!

  51. I’m ashamed&embarrassedbut I don’t know how to cook. But this recipe looks so easy and tasty I’m excited to try and make. Thanks I will be looking at more recipes to try.

    1. One of my main goals is to make recipes that are accessible to people who are ashamed and embarrassed that they can’t cook. :) It just takes a little practice!

  52. Just curious if anyone has used a substitution for the tomatoes? My fiancé hates tomatoes but will eat dishes with rotfl so I thought about using that instead.

  53. I prepared this tonight and it was delicious! I didn’t have fresh parsley so substituted with dry and also added about 1 tsp of dried Basil and 1/4 cup of white wine. I cut the shrimp in half to get more shrimp per bite. Sprinkled with Parmesan and extra red peppers. Thanks for the recipe!

  54. Easy and delicious. We sprinkled some parmesan cheese on it.

    Thanks!

(We got a copy of your book last week. Yay!)

  55. I’ll see your butter and raise you a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream!! :D This was fabulous! I threw in a bit of cayenne pepper and the sour cream at the end. Thanks for the recipe!

  56. Hi,
Silly question but does this call for 8 ounces of cooked or un-cooked pasta? Thank you!

  57. Made this recipe tonight! it was quick and easy! I love the step by step photos, it makes it impossible to screw up! having said that, I made mine a little too spicy, but I would definitely make it again adding onion and cheese next time! I will give a lot of the other recipes a go for sure! :)

  58. I just made this tonight and it is INCREDIBLE. I tripled the crushed red pepper (my husband and I are spicy-food fanatics) and it was so so good. We ate the entire thing between us two. I have YET to be disappointed by one of your recipes. I have made a ton of your dinners and I am so thankful for finding your site. They are all amazing, and this one is top at the moment!

  59. I will add a bit of goat cheese at the end…it brings a different taste to it….

  60. I made this the other night, and my boy friend loved it! I made it with chicken and added some cayenne pepper. My boyfriend said it wasn’t good, it was great! Thanks!

  61. Made this for dinner tonight. It sounded very good, but it turned out extremely dry. Hoping the next recipe I try is better.

  62. So. Yummy. I doubled the recipe and added 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper and substituted spinach in place of parsley (because I had spinach that needed to be used up). The spinach is fine, but doesn’t actually add much. Next time I will add 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper, because the 1/4 tsp added a bit too much heat instead of flavor. Also, feta on top is amazing.

  63. I made this tonight and my husband and I loved everything about it!! Cheap, quick, and easy!! Even better, enough left for lunches tomorrow! We also tried the Greek marinated chicken a few nights ago, another wonderful meal!!

  64. I LOVE YOUR SITE! This is the second recipe of yours I’ve tried this week and this one takes the cake! This was so delicious. Very easy. Very tasty.

  65. OH MAN. this was as good as anything I’ve had in a restaurant. i added a couple of green onions i had leftover from another recipe, and a handfull of sliced kalamata olives from my fridge. i didn’t have any fresh parsley, but tossed in a bit of dried rosemary with the tomatoes. EXCELLENT meal!!

  66. Just made this tonight. I added some oregano, italian seasoning, chardonnay, and 3 cheese blend (romano, parmesan, asiago). It was wonderful – this recipe is a keeper! Oh, and it also works with spaghetti noodles if fettuccine is not available.

  67. I just made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious! My hubs agreed too! Thank you for the recipe!

  68. This looks so delish! I’m going to try it with chicken instead of the shrimp since I can’t have them. I’ll let you all know how it comes out!~

  69. I made this tonight. Instead of fettucini, I had leftover udon noodles from your dragon noodles recipe.
Let’s just say…it’s not an equal substitution. So I started throwing stuff in to fix it: fresh basil, salt and pepper, parmesan and sriracha.
I’ll try it again (adding wine – I should have just done that in the first place) with real noodles and not my overcooked udon that really killed this otherwise awesome sounding dish. :/

  70. Love it, fast easy meal and the kids ate it too. A friend told me about the blog and we are trying more recipes this week. Also like the feta idea!

  71. Thanks for a great recipe. My husband and I loved this. I can’t wait to make more of your recipes.

  72. Being on a super-budget (terrible job market where I live as well as newlywed-lifestyle change), these recipes are regulars for us. This one’s going on the table tomorrow night! I always come here when meal-planning. I appreciate that you keep the kitchen pantry staples while adding variety to each dish. My husband will get excited and ask, “Are we eating budget tonight??” in reference to your awesome blog. Thanks for keeping us, and our wallets, full and happy! Cheers :)

  73. I made this last on a whim … haven’t been food shopping and had nothing in so grabbed some shrimp and decided to whip this up. EXCELLENT! Thumbs up from hubby and 12 year old son. Really simple to make and quick. DELICIOUS! This one’s being brought into rotation as a regular.

  74. I made this a few nights ago, it was so good! I took your advice and added a little pinot grigio that I had open. It was delicious!

  75. Just made this! Waiting on the hubby to come home from work and see what he thinks. Excited because he suggested I learn to cook with seafood. Thanks for my first recipe! It so yummy

  76. I made this last night because I love every ingredient in this. I added a little Pinot Gris at the end as well. I think my mouth is still watering

  77. my blogging buddy, Niki, tweeted this recipe to me. she added white wine to hers and so did i. and because i try to get in as many green leafy veggies as i possibly can – i threw some baby spinach in the mix!

  78. I recently found your site. We have made about 7 of your recipes so far. Evey one of them has been fantastic and you have helped me save so much money!! Thanks so much! In fact, I have a loaf of cranberry bread proofing before I put it in the oven right now!

  79. Fan-freakin’-tastic recipe, girl!! Just finished eating a few minutes ago and the boyfriend is still ravin’ about it :)

  80. I do this without the garlic (I can’t digest it). I’ve also been known to add some eggplant to it. Love my shrimp pasta!

  81. I’ve been making this dish for years now–it’s my signature company dish. I add a lot of fresh chopped basil instead of parsley, and serve it sprinkled with parmesan. Sometimes I add minced sundried tomatoes (packed in olive oil) and/or diced fresh tomatoes to the sauce to build complexity; artichoke hearts or sauteed broccoli are good add-ins. Best when using fresh refrigerated fettucini instead of dried (yes, it is pricier). I’ve also subbed chicken for shrimp in a pinch. The best part is I can have it on the table in 30 minutes!

  82. I was looking for a quick, pantry supper tonight and this fit the bill. It was easy to make and super delicious! When planning my weekly meal plan, your site is usually my first and last stop :) also…I love the new search feature – it works so well! Thanks for another winner!

  83. I made this for dinner tonight since we’ve had a couple of tomatoes in the fridge as well as a bag of shrimp in the freezer that needed to be used up (we got it on sale a while back for even less than you have it listed for here!) My printer wasn’t working so I kind of had to wing it, heh; we made a few minor modifications for our personal tastes and to work with what we had in the pantry. (I also accidentally quadrupled the pasta instead of doubling it — ooops!)

Even so, this is a pretty foolproof recipe. It turned out delicious! Thank you, Beth!

  84. Yum! My mom makes a similar dish and it’s fantastic. Try adding some feta at the end!

    1. I wish I would have thought of this when I make it last night. I actually have a bit of feta
